Watch

IMG_1340Watch me wither in front of your eyes;
Rub my shoulder till you become sore.
Watch me bed ridden and try to remember all the little things:
The time I cut that lemon and missed,
The red napkin left on the table,
The tears that followed.

Watch me wither in front of your eyes;
Now watch a little closer…
Watch the preparation:
Digging deep into the light
“I saw it and came back!”
What would it take,
To have two conversations at once:
‘Rub my gums,’ and ‘why isn’t she speaking anymore?’

Watch me take flight
Going to places you only visit in darkness;
In dreams
In times of extreme exhaustion.

Watch me, and breathe the memories
For your son
For your days
For your evenings by the fire.

Breathe the memories;
Let everyone you encounter meet me.
And soon,
Soon my grandson…
They will watch you wither and you will take flight.
